Green products from renewable sources
As is well known, crude oil is a complex mixture of natural, gaseous, liquid, and solid hydrocarbons. The hydrocarbons in crude oil are paraffinic (saturated), olefinic (unsaturated), naphthenic, and aromatic. There are many other classifications of hydrocarbons that are more detailed and describe the properties of these compounds more precisely.
In short, crude oil is the fundamental source and raw material for the chemical, fuel, and energy industries. The fuel and energy industry obtains gasoline, diesel oil, heating oil, aviation fuels, and marine fuels. The sector receives raw materials for heavy organic synthesis in the petrochemical industry, such as ethylene, ethylene oxide, propylene, benzene, toluene, xylene, butadiene, ethylbenzene, and plastics polyethylene, polypropylene, and more.
At present, when the economy of the whole world must undergo a transformation and become a low-emission economy, the primary question arises whether, based on renewable energy sources, it will be possible to produce advanced zero-emission fuels and green products, such as those produced by deep processing of crude oil as a raw material for further processing.
The second question that arises is the cost of adapting the currently operating refinery and petrochemical installations to the new raw materials. Will plants such as hydrodesulfurization, catalytic reforming, isomerization, fluid catalytic cracking, pyrolysis, and other production processes lose importance to new production processes?
The answer is NO. All these processes are and will be the inherent and fundamental processes for creating these products. They will only have to undergo specific modification processes, and in some cases, retrofitted with other accompanying installations. A prime example is a renewable diesel produced in the HVO plant. This oil has the same parameters as traditional diesel made of crude oil. That technology also gives other semi-finished products for further processing into finished commercial products, based on currently existing process installations.
Also interesting and worth considering are new technologies that give the possibility of producing green chemical products, for example, technologies that use glycerin resulting from the production of FAME biodiesel as a raw material for further processing.
The production transformation process related to achieving environmental neutrality is a process that will continue and develop. An indispensable element of this transformation will also be the use of zero-emission energy carriers to generate electricity, heat, and steam (low-pressure and high-pressure) for production processes.

In this article, our company does not discuss intensely the possibilities related to the Biomass to Liquids technology and other solid biomass gasification technologies, which also provide a solution to many of the GHG emissions problems, but over the possibility of using the inedible and emission-free vegetable oil produced at Kesler Smart Plantations as a primary raw material in current production.
The stability quality of the raw material is crucial for the production process and the economic effect. Physicochemically stable oil, thoroughly cleaned of mechanical impurities and water, with stable physicochemical parameters, allows avoiding different additional costs, such as the costs associated with cleaning and preparing the raw material for the process. In addition, thanks to the physicochemical stability, it is possible to plan the efficiency of the products of this process accurately and plan the demand for not only energy utilities, but also the need for hydrogen necessary in the process, and more precisely define such technological parameters as process temperature, pressure, and flows. Stable oil also means minimizing any waste occurring in the process and the lack of uncontrolled process disruptions.
There are many other examples, technologies, solutions, and business concepts for green product manufacturing. Undoubtedly, the most demanding task for any company will be to gather the suitable stable raw material to create the most beneficial and appropriate production model.

Biodiesel plants in Europe are in supply shortages and urgent need of raw materials that are not produced from food, this is due to the 2021 ban on the use of palm oil for energy production, and the sweeping ban expected in 2022 on the use of vegetable oils derived from food. There are currently about 120 modern plants (and a few dozen smaller ones) in the EU that produce about 11,000,000 tons of biodiesel a year, which equals 11 billion euros. Additionally, biodiesel imports from the EU increased by 54% in 2019.
