Originally, there were many hopes and expectations for biofuels. The most important thing was that the new fuels should be environmentally friendly, reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, make countries independent of imported fossil fuels, etc.

ILUC (Indirect Land Use Change) problem
The ILUC phenomenon is closely related to the production of biofuels and renewable energy. To increase the use of biofuels and green energy (in line with the directives obliging countries to achieve specific levels each year), existing cultivation areas were converted on a large scale to the cultivation of energy crops. With the simultaneous increase in the demand for food, it was necessary to acquire new land for agricultural purposes. These new areas were created by clearing existing natural forests, peat bogs, and other natural areas that had stored CO2, and prevented it from escaping into the atmosphere.
According to the research, it has been found that as a result of emissions from land-use change (ILUC), the use of biofuels can have a much worse environmental impact than the use of traditional fossil fuels.
Each of us knows the problem of cutting down natural tropical forests in Asia and planting oil palms used for energy purposes. Considering the overall emission process, it turned out that palm oil as a biofuel is much more harmful to the environment than traditional diesel. The effect was not long in coming - most countries such as the USA and EU countries banned the use of palm oil for biofuel purposes from 2021. It should be expected that next year, a similar fate may befall soybean oil. We will all be watching this closely.
